[UPDATE] There has been one instance where one of the earpieces stopped producing volume until I unplugged the headset and plugged it back in. The headset has also recently developed a permanent hum. It isn’t noticeable when playing a game…yet.

[UPDATE 2] The right earpiece seems to be defective. Every game session it will produce random static and then short out until I unplug it for about 10 seconds and plug it back in. Sending them back to Newegg for a replacement. I’ll keep this review updated. :)

I spent a few months looking for headphones to purchase to use for my PC and Xbox 360. I had originally settled on a different pair from SteelSeries until they notified me they were coming out with these, specifically designed for the Xbox 360. I waited and originally planned to purchase from Amazon but they ran out of stock so I just got them from Newegg.

The headphones come packaged in a nice box and is easy to take out and set up. There is a lot of cord length and a few splits in the cord (one part splits to USB, the other to headphone input) that make it seem like there are a lot of cords.

The sound quality for these headphones is phenomenal. I’ve never used gaming headphones before (only got them because I’m in a college dorm now) but I am very satisfied with this product so far. I tested music (which sounded good though sometimes the bass on a few songs sounded a little different), and a few genres other then FPS. For those that don’t know these headphones are designed for FPS gameplay. The sound quality for all of the genres I played (puzzle, RTS, RPG, Action, Fighting) was crisp and impressive, but the FPS games were the best (of course). Playing Halo Reach with these made me do a double-take. The sound of grenades in the distance, the sound of a bullet as it recedes from you or comes towards you….

Needless to say the sound is great. The mic is hidden in the headset and can be pulled out. I pulled it out once and immediately didn’t like it. It is cool it can be stowed but it feels like it could get stuck easily or break easily.

The LiveMix is the bread-and-butter of this headset. I used it once and then turned it off. Not because it didn’t work well, but because it worked TOO well. I was playing with random players that I didn’t care to listen to so when the game volume lowered so that I could hear them crisply I decided I didn’t need it on. When playing with friends LiveMix will be a must!

The headset is very lightweight and fits nicely along the head, fully enclosing the ears.

The reason to get the 5xb over the 4xb is:

    (1) More durable cord and construction
    (2) Can be dismantled for travel

If you are careful with your headset and don’t need to dismantle it, get the 4xb. They have the exact same sound quality.

If you use these with your PC then note the volume control is on the Xbox 360 plug-in. You will not be able to easily change the volume of these when they are connected to your PC.

I love these 5xB headphones with one exception, when turned up even slightly people around me can hear almost clearly what I’m listening to, that is the entire point to wear them, to not disturb everyone else. They are extremely comfortable and perfect for gaming. They aren’t the “bassiest” headphones I’ve ever owned, but still good nonetheless.
